TREAT YOURSELF

Obviously not everyone can have a doctor come to their house and give them a special ultrasound. But I also think that doing something a little extra during your pregnancy is well deserved. If you want to sneak a peek at your baby, there are 3D ultrasounds at some malls and shopping centers. Or just go get yourself a massage! You deserve it.

My family is really close (I mean, again, my adult brothers live with me), and I knew that whether we got great news or horrible news, I wanted them there with me. So we all crowded onto the same couch that I slept on: me, Daryl, my parents, my brothers, my managers, my uncle . . . the whole Trainor Team showed up to see our baby in 3D. Everyone knew that it wasn’t just for fun but that the doctor would be checking to make sure the baby’s brain, spine, and organs were developing correctly, and that they could be here for good news or life-changing bad news. We were still laughing and joking—that’s what we do—but I could tell that everyone was a little tense too. A 3D ultrasound isn’t like going to see a 3D movie—you don’t need special glasses, nothing pops out of the screen—but once they squeeze the goo on your tummy and start moving that wand around, you see your baby for real. The last time we’d had an ultrasound, he looked like a little ghostly white blob. But this time we could see his face: his cute little nose, his sweet mouth. He looked like a little doll, and while everyone oohed and aahed over this perfect little boy, I had my breath held and my eyes locked on the doctor. Did he just squint? Flinch? Is something wrong? Is he sweaty? This poor guy couldn’t have a private thought or a normal facial expression without me thinking something was horribly wrong.

I was about to burst and knew I couldn’t hold it in any longer. I looked at the doctor and said, “Is he okay?”

He looked at me and said, “He’s perfect.”

Joy and relief swept through my whole body. My mom’s hand squeezed mine, and Daryl pulled me in for a kiss. Our baby was perfect.

“Can you just make sure it’s really a boy?” I asked, because, you know, people are wrong sometimes! Everyone laughed, but the doctor for real checked. Suddenly my entire family and team were looking at my baby’s balls. Guess I couldn’t argue with that. Yep, still a boy.

This day is one of my very favorite memories: everyone I loved in one room, pouring all their love into this little baby. I don’t know how long this procedure would be in the doctor’s office, but I know that we had almost two hours of time to peek into the little universe inside me. I knew we were seeing the inside of my body, but it just seemed too incredible to be true. Right here, right inside
